Preparedness Manual - Chapter 7
Preparing For The Unthinkable

Subchapter Title
Maintaining Your Emotional Stability

Only You Will Get You Through This Age Of Terror.
I am a citizen in this grand experiment in democracy. It has been a tremendously successful experiment. It's the success that's troublesome. We have never as a nation of people experienced a time in our past when our basic safety and securities were threatened, on our homeland.

The term "good life" comes to mind. A life full of fun, leisure and comfort. Put bluntly, the good life has hurt us. It spoiled us with over indulgence, while blinding us to a changing world. It made us indifferent to our neighbors both near and far. We became blind to our fragility, hiding behind a cloak of invincibility. We became slaves to irrelevant emotions in a reality distorted by greed and self-affection.

9/11/01 gave each of us a vivid Reality Check. How well we Adjust To Our New Realty will greatly influence how well we will endure the ensuing Paradigm Shift. In order to survive individually and as a nation we must adjust our perception of reality. In order to "ENDURE" we must individually reach deep into our being, our very souls, for the coverage to face each day with a positive attitude, to fuel the fire in our bellies, that all survivors seem to have. Each of us needs the courage to recognize and admit, "Life will never be the same". That's right, that life is gone, the pre 911 life is gone, we are in the now. Even in the now, our life style is subject to change at any moment. The life of today is very very dynamic. What was this morning, by supper may be no more. It's not just 911, there is a horde of issues relentlessly sapping our vitality. Each of us must daily, in our own ways replentish the vitality lost yesterday. 911 was merely the beginning. Today around the world forces are at work to take from us, lifes treasures which we hold dear.

We cannot wish away terrorism. Consider this, if you hate your neighbor, how does your hate effect your family, especially your offspring? Do they hate your neighbor as well? Suppose we do succeed in eradicating a large number of terrorists around the world. The question really is; "How many 8, 10 and 13-year-old offspring have they left behind? How much hate is left behind brewing in a stew of hatred? Simply eradicating active terrorists will not extinguish terrorism. It will, as evidenced in many corners of the world, continue for generations, lurking and waiting to strike again.

As a nation we must develop a means by which we can transmute lingering hatred left behind by dead terrorist fathers and brothers. Unless we want a very long war, we must find a way to transmute this hatred into a tolerance and coexistence. Until such a time in which we can coexist on this planet; safety, security and comfort will not be ours. As you have read in earlier chapters, this is no easy task. To Islam, we are the infidels, and though we may find middle ground they won't. Only a devine intervention could transmute Islamic hatred.

Unfortunately, mankind has a very poor track record of transmuting hatred. In fact, at times, it seems mankind is particularly fond of hatred. So, it is my humble position: "The very first challenge in this new paradigm, is for each of us to make a mental adjustment". Each of us needs to accept the changes, which are altering our lives and we need to choose to adapt in order to ENDURE. Don't be side tracked by the media fluff. For example, fifty thousand people die annually in auto accidents and the media is silent, but they work us into a frenzy when few lives are lost to Anthrax. In reality, a far worse fate could be lurking just beyond tomorrow's sunrise.

Unless we adjust to our new reality, and prepare ourselves, terrorism will win. We cannot allow ourselves to be paralyzed with fear. We must adjust in order to endure the turmoil yet to visit us. This chapter is dedicated to igniting hope and courage within each one of us, so that each day we may rise from our sleep, full of hope and aspiration to the day.
I pray that it helps you.

The Valley Is Broad And Deep And There Are Many Crossroads
The Islamic Holy War and all it's hatred and terror cannot be denied. However, neither can the other issues in this publication be denied. As the title says, there are many "Crossroads". As we all know, crossroads can be a dangerous place. Move too quickly, don't move quickly enough. Look right but not left. All crossroads need to be traversed with caution and care.

We cannot wish away those nations who want to take our position of world prominance and prosperity. The same is true among nations who wish us harm.

We cannot wish away rapid climate change and the increasingly destructive weather, which a rapid climate change will cause.

We cannot wish away unaffordable fuel costs amd we cannot wish oil to be plentiful for ever. Nor can we wish to have abundant and cheap energy all our lives.

The first six chapters of this publication presented very very difficult problems facing mankind. Problems do not fade into the night. Often unattended to, problems can strengthen into irrevocable consequences.

As individuals we can only pray and strive for strength and wisdom, to prepare and to endure, whatever comes our way. There will be those who may not suffer or grieve at all, while others will rise each day to unrelenting strife. Without emotional strength, the times we are entering will become unbearable to many. They need not give up, strength can be found by all who seek it. Each of us will make the journey in our own way. As we glance around and cast our eyes on others, those who have found the strength will stand out in the crowd. Seek them out, for the more the strong share space, the greater will be their strength.
