Preparing For The Unthinkable

Subchapter Title
Nutritional Supplements [Immune Boosters]

NOTE:
All comments on the therapeutic efficacy of the following nutritional supplements are strongly suppressed, in order that the authorities [Food and Drug] are unable to make a case that unlawful medical claims are being proclaimed. I strongly suggest you refer to referenced links for further reinforcement of each products efficacy.

Antioxidants:
Remember one thing, nutrients which protect our bodies automatically are immune system boosters. Our bodies can't have a strong immune system if they are constantly being depleted by a hoard of tissue destroying and degenerating substances.

Antioxidants, scavenge for free radicals, and consequently are a very special group of nutritional supplements. They very special because they play such a very important role in protecting the body from the formation of very dangerous substances referred to as free radicals. Free radicals are important in as much as they have a strong tendency to impair the proper functioning of the immune system which leads to infections and a hoard of degenerative diseases including heart disease and cancer.

Coenzyme Q10
Coenzyme Q10 is an excellent antioxidant with characteristics similar to vitamin E. It is a powerful immune system stimulate. It is also known to have a great number of other very useful characteristics including, cardiovascular benefits, anti-aging effects, gum disease, and cellular energy.

Glutathione
This protein is produced in the liver by the breakdown of Cysteine, Glutamic Acid, and Glycine. As an antioxidant it protects against cellular damage. It protects the body against cigarette smoke, chemotherapy, alcohol toxins, and the negative exposure to radiation. It is also a detoxifier of heavy metals and drugs. Glutathione protects body cells by neutralizing the oxygen molecules before damage occurs. Along with selenium and the enzyme Glutathione peroxidase that controls hydrogen peroxide, it works synergistically with the other two enzymes to protect the liver.

In addition to protecting cellular structure, Glutathione also protects artery tissues, heart, brain, blood cells, kidneys, the lenses of the eye, lungs, liver, and the skin. It is a powerful inhibitor of liver cancer and also acts as an anti-aging compound. Research indicates that taking the supplements N-acetylcysteine or L-cysteine plus L-methionine can have a more positive results in increasing Glutathione than taking Glutathione alone as a supplement.

Grape Seed Extract [Oligomeric Proantocyanidins (OPC)] OPC partnering with vitamin E, creates a powerful antioxidant enzyme called Glutathione peroxide, which converts hydrogen peroxide to water. Selenium is important in this service to the body due to the number of products used in the home containing hydrogen peroxide, which can end up in the tissues of the body. Selenium is particularly useful as a guardian of blood cells, the heart, the liver, and the lungs. It is also known to enhance antibody production and response against infection.

Selenium
Selenium is an anti-oxidant enzyme which protects the body against hydrogen peroxide, by converting it into harmless water. It's anti-oxidant properties also protect blood cells, the heart, the liver and the lungs.

Viruses tend to mutate in selenium-deficient animals and become virulent [bad]. Selenium prevents the mutations that increase tissue damage during infection. [J American College Nutrition 20: 384–88S, 2001; FASEB Journal 15: 1846-48, 2001; Journal Nutrition 133: 1463–67S, 2003]. Brazil nuts are  a very good source of selenium.

Vitamin A and beta-carotene
Research has shown that vitamin A boosts the immune system by stimulating white blood cell function and increasing the activity of antibodies. A deficiency in "A" often is associated with increased risk of infection, which tend to reduce the level of "A" available even further. The immune system enters a downward spiral

Both "A" and Beta-carotene are loaded with antioxidant’s, which destroy carcinogens and guard against heart disease is, stroke and also lower cholesterol levels.

Vitamin A tends to protect the skin and mucus membranes, which of course represent the body's first line of defense against invading substances.

Vitamin C
Known as a powerful antioxidant, vitamin C also protects other antioxidants, which gives it a double value. Certain areas of the body including brain cells and cells in the spinal cord frequently are expose to free radical scavenger's, and the cells can be readily protected by sufficient quantities of vitamin C. This antioxidant works well and his effectiveness is enhanced if it is joined by the presence of a bioflavonoid called hesperidine.

Vitamin C also is a powerful detoxifier of many undesirable substances and consequently it plays a key role in boosting and maintaining a healthy immune system. As an immune system enhancer it stimulates certain important immune system cells.

In addition to promoting a healthy immune system, "C", according to many natural remedy physicians, can halt an infection in its tracks if administered in mega doses.

Vitamin E
Vitamin E is especially useful in the prevention of lipids being oxidized. It actually protects the outer coating (membrane) of every cell, because cell membranes are composed of lipids. E also improves oxygen utilization. It can also help reduce the tendency of developing cataracts caused by free radical damage. Recent findings indicate there is a relationship between adequate levels of zinc in the system and having normal levels of vitamin E in the blood. It is known that selenium improves the absorption of vitamin E intake.

Zinc
Zinc is known to be important constituent of a healthy immune system. As an antioxidant it has a very special characteristic inasmuch as it is also a constituent of the powerful antioxidant enzyme referred to as SOD. As indicated in the section covering vitamin E., adequate levels of zinc are desirable in order to balance the level of vitamin E. in the blood system.

Zinc is believed to promote a strong immune system. It has a propensity to revitalize the thymus gland [prime immune system gland] and its production of white blood cells. Autoimmune diseases, include chronic ailments linked to the improper functioning of the immune system, ie lupus, rheumatoid arthritis, or fibromyalgia, all of which have shown a tendency to improve while taking zinc supplements. In addition, too little zinc has been linked to a decreased immune response in older people.

OTHER IMMUNE BOOSTING NUTRIENTS

Oil of Oregano
Studies on Oil of Oregano indicate a propensity to kill viruses, bacteria and fungi.   Taking orally the Oregacyn capsules are often very effective in helping to control and reduce the effects of a viral or influenza infection in a matter of days or hours, depending upon the dosage.

Colloidal silver
Colloidal silver appears to be a powerful, natural antibiotic and preventative against infections. Acting as a catalyst, it reportedly disables the enzyme that one-celled bacteria, viruses and fungi need for their oxygen metabolism. They suffocate without corresponding harm occurring to human enzymes or parts of the human body chemistry. The result is the destruction of disease-causing organisms in the body and in the food.

Prior to 1938, colloidal silver was used by physicians as a mainstream antibiotic treatment and was considered quite "high-tech."

The March 1978 issue of Science Digest, in an article, "Our Mightiest Germ Fighter," reported: "Thanks to eye-opening research, silver is emerging as a wonder of modern medicine. An antibiotic kills perhaps a half-dozen different disease organisms, but silver kills some 650. Resistant strains fail to develop. Moreover, silver is virtually non-toxic." The article ended with a quote by Dr. Harry Margraf, a biochemist and pioneering silver researcher who worked with the late Carl Moyer, M.D., chairman of Washington University's Department of Surgery in the 1970s: "Silver is the best all-around germ fighter we have."

ADDITIONAL PROTECTION

Alpha-Lipoic Acid
This substance helps to neutralize free radical damage by synergistically working with vitamin C, vitamin E., and Glutathione. It has a helpful affect on enhancing the functioning of certain key enzymes found foods.

Billberry
Billberry is an herb, and is a powerful antioxidant that protects capillary walls by maintaining their strength and flexibility. It also protects the walls and membranes of red blood cells, which allows the cells to squeeze through capillaries with ease. In addition billberry tends to inhibit growth of bacteria, it strengthens collagen structures, and also acts as an anti-inflammatory agent. It also has anti-carcinogen and anti-aging characteristics.

Cysteine
Cysteine is an amino acid, which converts to the free radical scavenger called Glutathione, which is also an amino acid. It is a powerful detoxifier or of undesirable chemicals found throughout the body, and is especially useful in detoxifying the liver. It is known to be an effective detoxifier of alcohol, environmental pollutants, tobacco smoke, and others. If it's supplemental form, L.-Cysteine, if taken in proper quantities can boost the levels of protective enzymes in the body thus slowing the degenerative process caused by free radicals and normal aging.

Ginkgo Biloba
Ginkgo Biloba is an herb and is known to be a powerful free radical scavenger. It is known to enhance blood circulation by making blood pass through even the narrowest blood vessels with ease, which increases oxygen to the heart, brain, and other vital parts of the body. Often times, Ginkgo Biloba is mentioned in the same breath as brain functioning, cognitive powers, memory and other functions of the brain. This association references Ginkgo Biloba's ability to enhance blood circulation to the brain bringing adequate amounts of oxygen to brain tissue, which of course enhances brain functioning. Ginkgo Biloba is also known to lower blood pressure, inhibit blood clotting, and also has anti-aging properties.

Superoxide Dismutase (SOD)
SOD is in enzyme, which revitalizes cells and inhibits sell destruction. It is extremely important as an agent that can neutralize one of the most dangerous free radicals referred to as superoxide. The alarming factor is as the body ages SOD declines and free radical production increases. There are two types of SOD, one involving copper and zinc the other involving Manganese. Each of which protect a particular pot of the sell.

SOD is found in barley grass, Brussels sprouts, broccoli, cabbage, most green plants, and wheat grass. It is readily available in supplemental form as well.

Green Tea
Green tea contains the flavonoid catechin, and other compounds. Each compound promotes health and has anti-oxidant characteristics. Green tea plays a role in warding-off cancer, it lowers cholesterol, and reduces the clotting characteristics of blood. It aids in the burning of fat and consequently, can play a role in weight control. It also helps to regulate blood sugar and insulin levels.

Melatonin
Melatonin is a hormone. It was recently discovered and shows promise of becoming one of the most aggressive free radical scavengers available. Melatonin has a very unusual ability of being able to penetrate the membrane of any cell in the body, and consequently, can protect every cell in the body against free radicals. Because of it's ability to enter the cell it is able to protect the nucleus, which contains the cells DNA. It is commonly believed, that it is the nucleus that is effected by free radicals, with consequent alterations of the it's DNA. It is the alteration of the DNA that is considered a mutation, the actual manifestation of the damage of free radicals.
